Intuit Is Ending New Sales of QuickBooks Desktop: What Does This Mean For You?

In 2023, Intuit announced that it would be discontinuing QuickBooks Desktop as of July 2024. However, it’s important to note that this will only affect potential new users. New sales of QuickBooks Desktop (other than Enterprise) will cease at this time.

“Instead of viewing this announcement as a source of potential frustration, view it as an excuse to take a closer look at your technology processes. You may be surprised to discover how you can enhance the ways in which you operate.” – Karen Novotny, CEO, California Computer Options

This means that you need to make a decision on how to move forward. Although staying with QuickBooks Desktop as a current user is an option, this announcement is also an opportunity for you to explore new possibilities for your business.

While there are currently no plans to discontinue service for current users, it’s not a bad idea to get ahead. If you aren’t sure what your options are, this article is here to get you started. We’ll discuss why this is happening, what to expect, and where you can go from here.

Why Is QuickBooks Discontinuing Desktop?

QuickBooks is discontinuing Desktop for new subscribers as part of its strategic shift towards cloud-based solutions. This move aligns with the broader industry trend of prioritizing accessible, collaborative, and flexible technologies.

As a user, this might affect you if you’re planning to subscribe to QuickBooks Desktop products like Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, or Enhanced Payroll. Current subscribers can continue renewing their subscriptions while still receiving the latest updates and ongoing support.

However, older versions of QuickBooks Desktop will also eventually be phased out. Older versions of QuickBooks Desktop being phased out include non-subscription versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Mac. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get ahead of this shift early and seek cloud alternatives or move to QuickBooks Online.

These changes will only apply to the U.S. Users outside of the U.S will not be affected at this time.

Take This as an Opportunity to Take a Closer Look at Your Tech

When Will QuickBooks Desktop Be Discontinued?

QuickBooks Desktop will be discontinued for new U.S. subscribers after July 31, 2024. Here’s a visual timeline outlining the key milestones in the discontinuation process to help you prepare for your transition.

Please note that although it is technically possible to purchase QuickBooks Desktop on the day of July 31st, this is not encouraged. Current users may continue using and receiving updates after this cut-off date, but the time after this date is intended to be a transitional period.

If You’re Still Using QuickBooks Desktop, What Should You Do Next?

As mentioned, just because current users can technically still use the software after July 2024, that doesn’t mean everyone should make that their permanent solution. Here are your options if you’re still using QuickBooks Desktop.

Move From QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBook Online

QuickBooks’ online version provides real-time data access and collaboration tools. It’s a user-friendly platform for managing finances with ease and efficiency. Even without Desktop’s discontinuation, it would still be a wise idea to make the switch.

Here are steps of moving from Desktop to Online:

  1. Assess your current QuickBooks Desktop data for compatibility.
  2. Backup your QuickBooks Desktop data.
  3. Create a QuickBooks Online account.
  4. Use the migration tool in QuickBooks Desktop to transfer data.
  5. Verify data accuracy in QuickBooks Online post-migration.
  6. Familiarize with QuickBooks Online features and layout.

Switch to QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise will remain available for new subscribers after July 2024. If your business has complex needs, this may be a good option. However, bear in mind that QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is more expensive and it’s not the right solution for every current user.

Explore Other Accounting Software Options
If neither QuickBooks Online nor QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise are good options for your business, you may consider a different platform. Xero, FreshBooks, and Zoho Books are all similar tools that may better suit your needs if this is your situation. Although, do consider the potentially large learning curve that may come if you make this choice.
